4 Things You Dont Know About Job Interviews

4 Things You Dont Know About Job vorstellungsgesprchs4 Things You Dont Know About Job Interviews3Here are four things you dont know about job bewerbungsinterviews.4 Facts About Job InterviewsFor centuries, there were very few formal interviews for jobs. The most common methods of obtaining employment were by being an heir, an apprentice, or simply by showing up and being chosen for the day.The korrekt interview was used as early as the 1500s but was used to describe face-to-face meetings, not the current job practice. The word interview comes from the Middle French word entrevue, which means formal meeting. The 1920s shifted perspectives of employers, since there were more people in the workforce who had attended college. Businesses realized they could be more selective and began using some of our modern interview techniques.Interviews in the early 1900s were different than they are today. Rather than a meeting with hiring parties, it was in test form and required a certain score in o rder to be considered.4 Job Interview TrendsMore Structure While the open-ended tell me about yourself question will probably be sticking around, more businesses are finding greater success in choosing good candidates through the use of structured interviews. Although the practice is not widely adopted, it is becoming a more popular choice to compare candidates.Odd and Quirky Many interviewees are finding themselves faced with odd interview locations and quirky interview questions. Most people expect to talk about their skills in an office, not what their theme song is or what Disney character they are in the middle of the woods. But, it is more common than ever before.Cultural Ambassadors While the experience and skill-based part of the interview is held with hiring managers, many businesses are adding a component to the interview to evaluate how the candidate will fit with the company culture. These cultural ambassadors are not concerned with experience, but how a person will mesh with the company environment.Video Interviews Gone are the days of meeting with a few people in a conference room. Nowadays, companies are harnessing technology to screen candidates through video interviews, using a range of online meeting and video solutions. In recent years, more emphasis has been put on retaining great employees, rather than finding one that is perfect for the job right now. Most companies are looking for people who will not be only great for operations, but also great for the company culture. Ultimately, they want a well-rounded individual who will stick around for the long-haul in a mutually beneficial situation.Readers, were you surprised by what you didnt know about job interviews? Overcoming the Daily Grind in a Sales Job

Overcoming the Daily Grind in a Sales JobOvercoming the Daily Grind in a Sales JobFor those new to abverkauf, the multiple daily responsibilities may seem overwhelming. In general, the daily expectation of all sales professionals boils down to two things Starting new sales cycles and advancing those already started. Sounds simple. Just two things to do every day. And for those searching for a sales job, you have just two daily tasks as well Finding a sales company looking for sales professionals and advancing yourself through the hiring process. Again, two seemingly simple tasks. However, what is involved in these two simple tasks can be anything but easy. Completing these two daily tasks can wear a professional down, causing diminished motivation levels, decreased effectiveness and often grinds some down to the point that they choose to leave their employer or are asked to leave. Fortunately, there are a few strategies that can help sales professionals overcome the daily grind. Cl ear Goals and Self-Expectations It is often said that if you do not know where you want to go, any road will get you there. It is very true when it comes to sales and job searching. Starting every day with a clear desired outcome will keep you focused and directed. If you set daily goals that accomplish your two daily expectations, you wont experience the stress associated with not knowing what to do every day and why you are doing all the tasks expected of you. Remember this simple saying Clear goals clear your path. Mini Vacations? Whether you are already in sales or searching for a sales job, taking a vacation can do wonders for your effectiveness. However, week-long vacations often create more stress than they relieve. A week out of the selling or job hunting field can have a negative effect that lasts several weeks. Not only will you spend at least some of your vacation time wondering what your competition is doing, but youll also have a challenge truly enjoying your vacati on is you have any pending work waiting for you back at the office. Taking long weekends as opposed to full weeks gives you a much-needed break and the option to re-focus your goals. When returning from a mini-vacation, your missed workload will be much easier to bear. Usually, while getting back in the game after an extended vacation takes several days, getting back up to speed after a long weekend takes just a few hours or a full day at the longest. A Commitment to Personal and Professional Development Author, speaker, and business coach, Stephen Covey, preaches that one of the most important parts of your life, whether professional or personal, is to take the time to sharpen your saw. What this means is that if you do not take time out of each day to work on self-improvement, your effectiveness will slowly but surely fall off. Think about it, if you drove your car every day but never took the time to make sure the tires are properly inflated, that the oil was frequently chang ed and that the scheduled maintenance was completed, how long would your car keep running? Eventually, your car would experience a serious issue. Your body and your mind are the same. Neglect your body, and your energy levels will suffer. Never take mental health breaks or neglect to feed your mind with new ideas, thoughts, and challenges, and youll either never keep up with the inevitable changes in your industry of burn out under the stress of the daily grind. Give Every day Your Best Singer/songwriter Harry Chapin once told a story about the two types of tired. One type of tired is experienced after a day that you didnt give your best to anything. And while the end of the day may find you exhausted, the exhaustion comes from knowing that you still have much to do and that a day was wasted. When you go to sleep, you toss and turn and do not sleep well. The other tired is felt after you gave your best to all your tasks. And while you may not have accomplished all your goals an d may have even s-lost some of your battles, you rest easy in knowing that you gave 100% of your potential. Giving your best to your day may seem like a great way to add to the effects of the daily grind but produces the opposite effect. Youll feel better about yourself and your opportunities. Youll find areas that need your attention and discover talents that you didnt know you possessed. Giving your best puts you beyond the reach of guilt and from reproach. Giving your best every day, whether at your sales job, your ?job search or during time away from your tasks, is the most effective way to grind away the daily grind.?

Learn About Classic Sales Techniques

Learn About Classic Sales TechniquesLearn About Classic Sales TechniquesSavvy salespeople know how to use psychological techniques to help keep a sale moving forward. These strategies work by breaking down or sneaking past your prospects natural resistance to be sold. Since all of these approaches are manipulative, youll need to take care in using them. For example, dont use such a tactic to sell something that isnt really a good fit for a prospect. However, using these techniques to nudge a prospect out of their inertia gently is usually fine.? Foot in the Door This very old sales approach is based on getting the prospect to agree to something small, and then asking for something bigger. The classic example would be selling a small product at a very low price (also known as a loss leader), and then later selling the same prospect something more costly. This technique is mostuseful for non-profit sales, and many charities use this technique, asking for a small favor or donation a nd then gradually requesting more and more assistance. Foot-in-the-door is less useful with for-profit sales but can still be effective if the initial request and later requests are closely related. Door in the Face The opposite of the foot-in-the-door technique, door-in-the-face starts out with a large request that you know the prospect will decline followed immediately by a smaller request (the second request being what you really wanted the prospect to do). It works for two reasons first, your prospect will often feel bad about having to refuse your initial request, and will be more inclined to agree to the smaller request in buchung to make it up to you and second, in comparison with your very large request, the second request will seem insignificant. Door-in-the-face works only if the second request is made immediately after the first when the feeling of guilt and the contrast between the two is the strongest. And Thats Not All Familiar to infomercial viewers, this tec hnique involves rattling off a series of gifts or concessions. There are several possible variations to this tactic. You can tell someone all the things you plan to do. (Not only will we get the product to you by Tuesday, well ship it at no charge and well even install it for you for free.) You can list an increasing number of discounts. (As a corporate customer wed normally give you 10% off the list price, and since youve also been with us for more than a year wed make that a 20% discount, but in this case, Im going to knock a full 30% off the price.) Or, you can start with a high price and then list a series of reductions. (This item is priced at $2,000. Since we have an overstock, were selling it for $1,600. But because you are a loyal customer, Im going to reduce the price to $1,500 for you today.)And-thats-not-all works best if you dont give the prospect a lot of time to think about it, so making it a limited time offer is far more effective. Break and Fix The break-and-fix technique knocksyour prospect out of his normal mindset and makes him more willing to agree with what you say next. It involves saying something odd or disturbing and then immediately following it with something rational. In one study, psychologists told one group of customers that a pack of eight cards cost $3.00. They told the second group that a package of eight cards costs 300 pennies, which is a bargain. Listing the price as 300 pennies disrupted the customers normal train of thought and made them more agreeable to the following statement about it being a bargain. In the study, only 40% of the first group bought the cards but 80% of the second group made the purchase.

Recognition Why we should stop recognizing employees and start appreciating them

Recognition Why we should stop recognizing employees and start appreciating themRecognition Why we should stop recognizing employees and start appreciating themAs I have traveled across the country working with businesses and organizations, Ive had the privilege to interact with HR professionals and corporate trainers. Initially, I was surprised to hear reports from both professionals and front-line workers that the vast majority of employee recognition programs arent working. These activities generally are not having a positive impact on employees or workplace morale. In many cases, recognition programs actually are backfiring and creating negative reactions among kollektiv members. In fact, the three most common reactions I receive from employees when they talk about employee recognition are apathy, sarcasm, and cynicism. Why? As I examined the issue more closely, the reasons become clear. The root of the problem is that recognition is very different from authentic appreciation. Here are some of the key issuesRecognition is largely about behavior.Catch them doing what you want and recognize it, the recognition books say. The sole focus is on the employees behavior and the managers behavior (observe and reinforce). The primary emphasis of recognition is improving performance. The goal is for employees to do more (or better quality) work. As a result, the focus is on what is good for the company and/or the manager (they look good when their kollektiv performs well). The relational direction of recognition is top - down.Recognition comes from the administration, managers and supervisors. It is occasionally communicated peer-to-peer, but rarely from worker to supervisor or manager.Recognition is really an organizational function. And, as a result, recognition at its foundation feels impersonal, contrived, and is rarely experienced as a genuine expression of appreciation for the team member as a person.Heres what authentic appreciation looks likeAuthentic appreciation ha s a very different feel and quality to it than recognition.Appreciation focuses on performance plus the character qualities of the team member and their intrinsic value as a person. As a result, team members can be valued and receive appreciation even when they dont perform well. (Anyone else made a mistake lately?)Appreciation has dual objectives to improve performance but also to support and encourage the person.Team members often need a word or action of encouragement, especially when they arent performing at their best because of other issues going on in their lives. The goal of appreciation is what is good for the company and what is good for the person. If a colleague communicates authentic appreciation it is based in a foundational concern for the individual (which may mean helping them find a position that is a better match for them than their current role.)Appreciation requires more than behavior, it requires heart attitude. This is really the difficult part of appreciation - i t has to be genuine and from the heart. You cant fake it.Appreciation can be communicated in any direction. One of the exciting lessons Ive learned is that colleagues want to know how to encourage and support one another. Appreciation can be expressed from anyone to anyone else in the organization.Appreciation is based in a person-to-person relationship. We dont believe that an organization (an entity) can truly appreciate an employee or team member - that is why so many employees react to recognition programs - they dont feel real. So, as you look for a new organization to work for, pay attention to the culture. Is it solely focused on production and performance, or are employees valued, not only for what they do, but for who they are? And this is an important quality to look for as you talk to current employees.Paul White, Ph.D., is a psychologist, speaker, consultant, and theauthor of The Vibrant Workplace, co-author of Rising Above a Toxic Workplaceand The 5 Languages of Appreciati on in the Workplace.

How to create content people want to readHow to create content people want to readIf youre a blogger or zugnglich content creator, youre probably interested in sharing your work with more people. You put a lot of time and hard work into creating the best content possible. But you know that the internet is crowded. Its competitive and hard to get noticed. So you turn to the gurus. Maybe you take a few online courses to learn how to grow your audience and become a blogging rockstar. You learn all about pop-ups, lead magnets, sales funnels and more. All the strategies, hacks and tactics.Yet, despite all the expert advice, a lot of bloggers never grow their audience much. It can be frustrating and demoralizing. So whats a desperate blogger to do?What follows is a short cartoon guide and some commentary to hopefully help you find your way.Focus on thereaderIllustrations by John P. WeissSome people use the internet for work and serious research, but most are there to escape. Think of your own online habits. Youre often there to be entertained, moved, or learn something new.Focus on the reader when creating content, not how brilliant a writer you are. Think about what youre creating from the point of view of the reader. Will she enjoy and appreciate the work? Or will she feel like youre trying to sell her something? People can smell an agenda.Do you enjoy pop-ups on websites? Yeah, me neither. The same goes with endless email sign-ups. I dont mind a simple, elegant email sign up, but I dont want it shoved in my face. Mostly, Im visiting the blog or website to enjoy the content. If I like the content, I might join the email list. But I never join an email list because I was held hostage with a pop-up. In fact, I typically leave when the pop-up bursts onto the page.Trust comes beforesalesA quality blog or website is all about building a relationship of trust between the content creator and the reader. The One Thing to Do for Objective in a Resume

The One Thing to Do for Objective in a Resume Creating an IT resume objective gives you a means to demonstrate a hiring manager what you wish to do and how youll benefit the business. Finally, stating an objective is optional, but it might help convince employers that you understand what you need and understand the business. My aim is to find the job. If your Objective says youre searching for a full-time job and youre asking for a part-time internship, you will probably be disqualified immediately. If youre looking for a career in management, you probably have years of specialist experience under your belt. Theres no special training needed to turn into a warehouse worker, but theres preference for people that have a high school education. You will get experience and extra training whilst on the job that may be added to future resumes. Perhaps you have warehouse packer experience. As a result, while your resume objective should consist of information on the career you want, you also wish to spell out why you are the perfect candidate for the job. Therefore, if youre searching for a new job, it is vital that your resume stands from the crowd to guarantee you a spot on the shortlist. You should definitely incorporate a resume objective statement in your resume when you submit an application for a job to be certain you may break the ice at the very first endeavor. A strong summary statement at the peak of your resume can increase the possibilities of them noticing what youve got to offer from the beginning. The majority of the employers are looking for dedicated, reliable, and skilled employees who know the actual significance of the term professionalism. Based on your degree of experience and the jobs youre applying for, what you decide to concentrate on in your resume summary might vary. When you place your career change objective resume together, you would like to make it as simple as possible for the employer to observe how your abilities and ab ilities would be a very good fit for the position. As stated previously need to pick skills that have some relevance to the job that youre applying for. A resume objective can explain why youre qualified for the job, even if its the case that you do not own a lot of related experience. The primary purpose of a resume is to present an easy and brief overview of your pertinent abilities, education, work experience and strengths that enables the hiring manager to generate a sensible decision in selecting interviewing candidates. When youre in search of a secretarial employment opportunity, your resume should incorporate an objective statement that clearly communicates the type and degree of job that you want to know more about. A good resume is fantastic, but nothing beats an applicant who can offer the particulars without needing to glance at the paper each and every second. New Step by Step Roadmap for Objective in a Resume Hiring managers in the advertising area will wish to b e informed about your achievements and successes with your advertising and marketing campaigns. Be certain that your resume destroys that average with a good format. Resume objectives are occasionally regarded as the old schooltype of resume. Writing a resume is not so difficult, but it does take some time and planning. Establishing an allusion is most likely just one of the simplest activities to do, because everything you will need can be only a very small creativity as well as a good comprehension of exactly where and the way that its possible to create a reference to an individual. In the main resume, you want to abide by a particular format and there is absolutely no scope of explanation there. You might not know where to departure in regards to writing a resume objective. In a variety of ways, an objective replaces a lot of the detail you would place in your professional experience section. The resume summary will function as their sales pitch. Together with helping w ith your layout, resume examples can allow you to see what sort of content you should put in your document. The template starts off with an expert overview of the worker.

International student scholarships for Australia

International student scholarships for Australia International student scholarships for AustraliaPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun With its high standards of both education and living, and eight of the worlds top 100 universities, Australia is becoming an increasingly sought-after destination for zwischenstaatlich students. The attractions are obvious zwischenstaatlichly recognised qualifications gained in a beautiful and vibrant setting but for some students, limited finances can get in the way of living the Aussie dream. There are many scholarships available to international students in Australia, from government-sponsored programs to those funded by the private sector and individual universities. Here is an overview of scholarship options you might consider. Government-sponsored scholarships for international students The Australian government currently invests $200 million each year in scholarship programs to support around 5000 international students to study in Austral ia at any one time. The Australia Awards were introduced in 2009 and are divided into a development arm the AusAID Awards and an achievement arm The Endeavour Awards. AusAID Awards The AusAID Awards include three different programs which offer opportunities for study or work experience in Australia. Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) have been introduced to contribute to the long-term development needs, growth and stability of Australias partner countries. Each year, up to 1000 people from 31 developing countries are helped to undertake full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study in Australia. Through their Australian education, it is hoped that scholars will develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and shape development outcomes in their own countries. Scholarship holders must return to their country of citizenship for two years after they have completed their studies to contribute to their countrys development. Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) Scholarshi ps and Fellowships aim to develop leadership and build partnerships within the Asia-Pacific, while also addressing priority development issues in the region. These are awarded to leaders or those who have the potential for leadership roles that can influence social and economic reform, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region. Study programs must relate to a priority development area disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development, or water and sanitation. ALA Scholarships are for masters or doctorate level study at an Australian university. ALA scholars also undertake a Leadership Development Program in Australia. Selection for ALA Scholarships is based on leadership qualities, academic excellence and the potential to influence change on returning home. ALA Fellowships are for short-term study, research and professional development activities wit h Australian organisations for mid-career professionals from eligible countries. Endeavour Awards The Endeavour Awards comprise the achievement arm of the Australia Awards. They offer opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Europe and Americas to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. This program is an internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program. The Endeavour Awards aim to Develop ongoing educational, research and professional linkages between individuals, organisations and countries. Provide opportunities for high-achieving individuals from Australia and overseas to increase their skills and enhance their global awareness. Contribute to Australias position as a high-quality education and training provider, and a leader in research and innovation. Increase the productivity of Australians through an international study, research or professional development experience. There are various types of Endeavour Awards , such as the Endeavour Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS), which is funded by the Australian Government and awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at one of the participating universities. The Endeavour Europe Awards provide financial assistance for postgraduate students from participating countries in Europe to undertake either a masters degree or PhD in Australia, in any field of study. Industry scholarships Various industry bodies within Australia offer scholarship programs to international students. To find out which scholarships are available in your area of study, visit JASON, a postgraduate scholarship database for Australia, and search your field. As an example, the International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management (ICE WaRM) offers a scholarship program to attract high-quality international students to education and training in water resources management, delivered by ICE WaRM partner institutions. Individual university scholarships Every university offers its own set of scholarships, many of which are open to international students, and some of which are specifically for international students. Many Australian universities are host institutions for both Endeavour Awards and AusAID Australian Development Scholarships and Australian Leadership Awards, offered at all levels of study (subject to eligibility and country requirements). RMIT University, for example, funds full scholarships for commencing and continuing international students to pursue research programs and also provides partial fee waiver scholarships across other levels of study. It also offers international scholarships to assist international students who are disadvantaged by their economic, social or geographic circumstances but have the academic ability and the will to succeed. Similarly, the University of Melbourne offers international postgraduate coursework awards to citizens of countries other than Austr alia who undertake coursework masters degrees in certain subject areas, as well as Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies. Each year the university offers around 100 MIRSs to international students. It is well worth researching what specific scholarships are being offered by the university of your choice in your area of study. Visit your universitys website as well as JASON and search by institution or field of study. Dublin to Sofia, Bulgaria A Powerful Week of Self-Discovery

Dublin to Sofia, Bulgaria A Powerful Week of Self-DiscoveryDublin to Sofia, Bulgaria A Powerful Week of Self-DiscoveryWzu sichbeie to begin?Im typing on a balcony overlooking a dense forest speckled with the 16th-century rooftops of Veliko Tarnovo. A fluffy light brown cat has taken this opportunity to jump onto my lap and nap. Its early morning and theres a mild chill in the air, so this is a welcome addition. With her help, Ive been converted from being a strict dog person to a lover of both animals. This welches a sign of things to come. Power Week has been a chance for me to learn about s values, discovering this company of friends. That welches the theme of the week A Company of Friends, and I welches curious to see how would that translate into ur upcoming activities. My expectations to date had been shaped by reading a piece by Vassy, s Digital Strategist, abouts Spring Power Week. The event was painted as a transformative period bringing new projects to life with small groups while building genuine and lasting relationships with the team. I couldnt wait to experience this. Not all Enhancers start their first day at Power Week, so I was thankful that I could break the ice during a time of self-exploration and development. Im hoping that this blog post provides you with an insight into what can a group that not only shares the same values but lives them and puts them into practice can achieve. How I ate the tongue, eyeballs, and brain of a lambI had never traveled to Bulgaria so I had few expectations as I landed at Sofia Airport. Our CEO, Georgi, was waiting for me outside. Georgi, or Joro as friends call him, welcomed me with a handshake, a hug, and a smile that instantly put me at ease. Before I could digest my new environment, I was sitting in a traditional Bulgarian restaurant in the center of Sofia. We discussed the fruchtwein pressing topic of the moment food. The recommendation was to eat the tongue, eyeballs, and brain of a lamb. OK, thats probably a bit much for most people. There was no pressure to eat it, but I had read so much about how delicious the local food was that it took little persuasion to make my decision. With a risk of laboring on the graphics food in question, the eyeball was my favorite part.I then had the chance to drop into the HQ for a quick tur of where the magic happens. What a space The building blended into the neighborhood so much so that I could have easily missed it. One stairway later and Im struck by the chic and artistic space that spanned in front of me. From the developers room to the marketing room, you could tell that the team designed each desk and meeting area with comfort and collaboration in mind. What impressed me most was the fact that they retained the dated Bulgarian features which came with the building throughout. From the 70s fireplace to the rotary phone on the wall. Awesome.Having worked in a number of US-based tech startups, Ive had my fair share of free snacks and beanbags. Th is office said more about the company than any other I had worked for before. The values of this group, values I would see in action later in the week, were all around. Thats something that made me excited when thinking about building out the Dublin office. Actually, using the word office to describe this place was doing it no justice.Related articles3 ways ur new feature Ask for Feedback will help you land your dream jobA complete guide to the platform menu functionsStop with team building events, try a retreat insteadI immediately felt as if I was part of something bigger than profitVelina, Head of Talent Leadership, collected me from my Airbnb, which was only a few doors down from her home. We traveled for just under 3 hours to reach medieval Bulgarian capital of Veliko Turnovo. As we approached the town the rest of the team greeted me. Its rare that you meet a group who welcome you as warmly as they did. From the outset, they made sure they constantly spoke in English and they d explain anything a foreigner wouldnt understand. This meant that in almost every conversation I learned a little more about the great history of Bulgaria.Power Week began with a welcoming dinner at a restaurant calledShtastliveca, which served mouth-watering meatballs. The dinner was an opportunity for me to introduce myself. I covered all the details of who I was and what I had been doing prior to joining the team. Surrounded by a group of ambitious 20 somethings, where at 28 I was older than the company average, was certainly unexpected Referencing experience I had as a former recruitment consultant and working as part of the Ad Operations team at LinkedIn generated some interest. But it was talking about my passions in travel, martial arts, and my fianc Becky (fishing for brownie points) that triggered the most conversation. Following some laughs at my expense, we got the food and drinks underway. Joro set the tone for the evening with a toast on the companys values and seconda ry to that its objectives. This struck me. He spoke from the heart and I immediately felt as if I was part of something bigger than profit. The first working dayWe based ourselves for the week in a coworking spaceFreedom21in the center of Veliko Tarnovo. Like many of the restaurants nearby, the back of the office benefited from views over the cliffside homes and endless forest. At any point, you could go from problem-solving to taking in the vast scenery. It was a truly memorable place and for the busy week that was ahead, a place I was thankful for.I spent that morning having breakfast with Vessy, Chief Strategy Officer, who was the first Dublin based employee. Eager to pick her brain on many topics, I filtered it down to some areas. That included what it was like to work remote for over a year, what the biggest risks to the business this year are, and how to say thank you in Bulgarian. If the name didnt give it away, Vessy is native to Bulgaria. But her dark humor and quick wit sho wed that 3 years in Dublin had put her well on her way to understanding our Gaelic ways. The conversation was exploratory but productive at the same time. We talked relationship building, establishing credibility, process improvement, hiring for Dublin, and company culture. Setting the tone for how one-on-ones would go in the future, I left with almost more questions that I had going into the meeting. That was actually a good thing. In contrast to the hundreds of meetings I had before, our conversation shook the preconceived plans I had and forced me to re-strategize the week ahead to make a further impact once back in Dublin. The challenge of the weekWe returned to the coworking space and received our first challenge of the week. We arranged ourselves in groups of 3 tasked with identifying an idea that could be easy to implement, and significantly beneficial to s current service offering. My name was on a pink post-it along with Deni (Culture Communications) Vassy so we, of course, named our team Team Pink. Brainstorming ideas was fun. I could quickly see how creative and passionate my teammates were about the existing product offering and how effective they were at articulating ideas. We closed on the idea of bringing video to our about section of the website. Granted, not the most innovative of ideas, but something we could pilot and integrate across all the businesses communications if successful. We went for it.That evening, with a view to getting some downtime after a packed day at the office, we booked into a City Walking Tour of Veliko Tarnovo. The guide naturally picked on me throughout the entire walk as I was the stranger, the foreigner, the one who needed to learn every aspect of Bulgarian history and pronounce 90 plus character Bulgarian words which ran across the top of nearby, historically significant, buildings. Retention of historical information that evening was at an all-time low. That said, I learned a ton of interesting facts from types of food and architecture to battles won. As the tour progressed, it seemed the neighboring countries which bordered Bulgaria all took something originally Bulgarian as their own. All said in good jest. I believe.Listen when others speak, and hear when they are quietThe next day we began with a presentation on Listening when others speak, and hear when they are quiet. Its the basis of any form of effective communication, whether in person or online. But so many people fail to do just that. We were assigned names out of a hat and responsible for setting up and delivering a one-on-one meeting. As luck would have it I pulled Vessys name. I had an opportunity to continue where we left off after yesterdays breakfast. I was mindful about using our time together wisely and this exercise was the best facilitator for just that. Unlike the others, who had been working together for quite some time, Vessy I were very much getting to know each other. This meant that our meetings, irrespective of f ormat, were quite informal. This didnt take away from the usefulness of our conversations together. I left feeling more confident we could achieve great things back on home soil. That evening we celebrated both Volen (Co-founder newly appointed Chief Marketing Officer) Joros birthdays. The dual celebration placed us all first in a restaurant called Ego 2 and then in the local Tequila bar. Until the early hours where we laughed about Irish pronunciation and the terrifying martial arts defense moves some of the engineers were learning.Orienteering trail around Veliko TarnovoWhat better way to come down from back to back days in the office than an activity day. The secret activity, which went from Plan A to Plan B due to the Irish weather I brought from Dublin, was revealed to us that morning. In our teams, we were to undertake an orienteering trail unique to each team and find clues to win points. We received a map with limited direction and told to go on our way. The team with the most points, displaying the strongest teamwork, would win. Clues in the form of QR codes were scattered around the city. We had to scan each one to reveal the next step. We ended up wandering around the forest that circled the town from the north but ultimately had a great time. The activity exposed the qualities in each of us as individuals such as leadership, communication, competitiveness, and how well we worked with others. Coming last in the competition was a low point for our team, but as eternal optimists, we spun it down to being all too similar. The activity was done and dusted by the afternoon and the day continued with a visit to an Ethnographic Village an hour outside of the city. This was my favorite part of the trip. It was like a history lesson on steroids. From traditional Bulgarian weddings, sweets, and clothing, to finding out about performed customs specific to each area in Bulgaria. This provided me a further insight into the ancestral past of the people around me .On the last official day of Power Week, we completed our team presentations. The ideas from team to team were impressive. All of them were relatively easy to execute and had clearly defined impact matched with realistic timelines. It was clear that everyone invested the time needed to produce good work. It also highlighted what we could achieve with structure, accountability, and teamwork. The winning team comprised of an idea which saw an internal lecture series running to leverage the expertise of our team for the benefit of others. After lunch, we returned to do our last group activity of the week, a classic trust exercise. As I closed my eyes, the team formed a circle. Before I knew it they were tossing me at the mercy of those around me. I was less concerned about trust and more concerned about whether everyone that circled me could carry my weight. But lo and behold, they did. We all took turns and it was a nice way to close out what had been a truly memorable and beneficial w eek.The beginning of an endA week after returning to Dublin, everything is still replaying in my mind. From getting to understand what makes the founders tick to building meaningful relationships with my new colleagues, and after that week, friends. I cant help but look forward to the next one. Unlike other onboarding weeks Ive participated in in the past, there was a sense of achievement and personal growth after it. This validated the theme of the week, A company of friends. I hope by reading this piece you felt that too.If youre in Dublin and are interested in joining our team or know someone who could be a good fit, Id love to hear from you. Work Enemy - Workplace Relationships - The Muse

Work Enemy - Workplace Relationships - The Muse Work Enemy - Workplace Relationships I’m a big believer that what you do for a living brings you to work and who you work with makes it all worthwhile. That’s why it’s such a huge pain when someone in your office not only refuses to be a team player, but also seems committed to being combatant. She says “no” to every idea you pitch. She refuses to acknowledge anyone’s effort but her own. She even rags on your lunch choices. I mean, seriously?! Unfortunately, this isn’t first grade (though that co-worker may be acting like it is), so you can’t fuss with some higher-up to make her play nice. You’re an adult and a professional, so it’s up to you to have a strategy for changing the tone of the relationship. In this 15-minute podcast, Brian Uzzi, a professor of leadership at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, outlines his recommended approach to dealing with “work enemies” head-on. It boils down to the 3 Rs: redirecting their emotion away from you, offering reciprocity to reduce a point of tension, no strings attached, and using rationality to establish new terms. Go ahead, restore your serenity now (my own fourth R). Slip on your headphones to check out the podcast below, then read Uzzi’s argument at the Harvard Business Review. Get inspired by Mirai Nagasu and Adam Rippons Olympic comeback

Get inspired by Mirai Nagasu and Adam Rippon's Olympic comeback Get inspired by Mirai Nagasu and Adam Rippon's Olympic comeback Four years ago, figure skaters Mirai Nagasu and Adam Rippon were eating In-N-Out cheeseburgers in shared misery after being left off the U.S. Olympics team roster. They understood the math. For the Olympics, you only get one shot every four years, and for a sport that uses the body’s lower center of mass, your aging body makes it increasingly unlikely for your muscles to pull off spins and jumps. The average U.S. Olympics figure skater is 22 years old.“It was awful,” Nagasu told  USA Today  about missing the roster.  â€œI was very close to quitting.”Fast forward to now, both Nagasu, 24, and Rippon, 28, are roommates at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, having successfully pulled off historic comebacks with their Sunday performances, helping the U.S. earn a team bronze. Here’s how they maintained the focus necessary to keep going after the long setback:Nagasu focused on doing something no U.S. skater had ever doneTo get back to the Olympics, Nagasu said she needed to b elieve in herself even when her performance was not reflecting her goals. The athlete ambitiously trained to complete the jump that only Japan’s Midori Ito and Mao Asada have successfully landed before her at the Olympics - the triple axel. To put the difficulty of this jump in context, the triple axel requires you to hurl your body into the air at full speed, spin your body around three-and-a-half rotations in less than a second, and then land backward on one foot.“This is a journey that started with me wanting to become better and improve and change myself. It doesn’t happen immediately. It was rough,” Nagasu said about her training. “I would have dreams that I could do this jump, then I would try it on ice and I would fall. But I knew in my heart this day would come.”On Sunday night, she accomplished a goal she had spent years preparing for, landing the jump and becoming the first American to land a triple axel at the Olympic Games. It’s a lesson in focus and betti ng on the longevity of your career, even when the current situation looks hopeless.Adam Rippon makes Olympics debutRippon is the elder statesman on the U.S. Olympics figure skating team, a skater that many had written off for failing to make the Olympics in 2010 and 2014.Rippon said the pressure of expectations was why he failed to make Olympics teams in previous years. After his cheeseburger-eating-low, Rippon said his coach asked him point-blank: Did he actually like competing? Once he realized that he did, he focused on competing for the Olympics on his own terms, coming out as gay in 2015 and focusing on his comeback. It worked. In 2016, Rippon won a gold medal at the U.S. championships, helping to prove he deserved to be on the three-man U.S. Olympics team.  As the first openly gay U.S. figure skater at the Winter Games, Rippon is now a pioneer both on and off the ice. When Rippon took that 2016 national title, his first title win in eight years, he declared a motivational phrase we can all use next time when we hit a career low: “I’m like a witch and you can’t kill me! I keep coming back every year, and every year I get better.”

4 Smart Tips for Furloughed Federal Workers to Find Temp and Project Work

4 Smart Tips for Furloughed Federal Workers to Find Temp and Project Work 4 Smart Tips for Furloughed Federal Workers to Find Temp and Project Work With the recent government shutdown, roughly 800,000 federal workers missed paychecks, which can have steep financial consequences for all involved. Many were unable to make mortgage or rent payments, repay student loans, or keep up with even the most basic expenses like groceries. To help these professionals prepare for future shutdowns and supplement their missing income, is continuing to offer federal workers and contractors up to 30% off subscriptions. And we invite you to attend  our FREE, exclusive members-only Remote Work Virtual Jobs Fair on Thursday, February 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. We also want to offer these job search tips for all the folks looking for supplemental work in such uncertain circumstances. These tips take into account that: Federal workers don’t know how long a shutdown will last and may be called back to work at any moment. A variety of options are needed for people with different personal circumstances, such as caring for children or other family members, living in rural areas without many local job options, or having physical or mental health considerations to factor in, for example. Future government shutdowns are possible and workers may need to pick up, drop, and pick up temporary work multiple times. Resiliency During the Shutdown with the Partnership for Public Service and Federal employees across the country felt the impacts of the shutdown. Are you one of them? The  Partnership for Public Service hosted a Facebook Live chat on January 10  with Vice President for Employee Engagement and Strategic  Initiatives Mika Cross. Mika is a former federal employee with 20 years of public service and discussed Resiliency During the Shutdown. BROWSE OPEN FLEXIBLE JOBS Remember these four tips if you’re a federal worker looking for temporary or side jobs: 1. Use multiple search criteria to pinpoint all your options. At, we have advanced search options for job types, work schedules, and remote work levels. To find jobs that can be done on a short-term or project basis, we recommend trying different combinations of the following: Job Types: freelance or temporary Work Schedules: occasional, short-term, alternative schedule, or flexible schedule Remote Work Levels: any, depending on how you want to work (100%, partial, or optional) 2. Look for jobs you can do outside your typical schedule. Because a shutdown may end at any moment, it’s a good idea to find work that you can do outside the schedule of your federal government job. That way, you can finish your temporary job even when you go back to work, rather than leaving your newfound client or manager in the lurch. Jobs like customer service representative, Internet or web search evaluator, writer or editor, accountant, CPR and first aid instructor, online tutor or teacher, and translator can all be excellent options because they often come with flexible, alternative schedules, and are often available as remote jobs. Check out these 11 examples of temporary jobs, hiring now, that might be a good fit.   3. Focus on why you’re interested in the job, rather than the reason you’re looking for work. Yes, a shutdown will likely made life difficult for you, but when you’re applying and interviewing for these jobs, it’s vital to not focus on that. Instead of talking about needing to look for work because of a shutdown, focus on why you’re interested in that particular job and company. What about it sparked your interest? Why would you find the work interesting, exciting, or fulfilling? What (besides the shutdown) made you want to apply? 4. Be professional when interacting with employers. Even though these jobs are temporary, your professionalism is a must. After all, you may want additional projects or assignments from this employer over the long-term, so handle the relationship professionally right from the start.

I Can Clearly Do The Job, So Why Cant I Get Hired

I Can Clearly Do The Job, So Why Cant I Get Hired I Can Clearly Do The Job, So Why Cant I Get Hired “I’m feeling a bit frustrated and definitely demoralized at this point. 6 times in the past few months, I have been told I am ‘overqualified.’ This last time, they didn’t give me the Sales Director role because I don’t have specific sales experience in the specific field this company is in. Now, the role beneath that is Sales Manager, and for that, they told me I’m overqualified. I can clearly do these jobs, so why am I not getting hired?” It’s confounding when you know good and well you can do the job, but keep on running into the “overqualified” brick wall. After all, “overqualified,” does include the concept of being “qualified,” so, from the jobseeker’s perspective, what’s the issue? Since it’s not within your control to change what the employer’s going to do, let’s concentrate on the mistakes you can avoid so you don’t get smacked with the “overqualified” label every time you turn around, and instead move through the interview process and hear the offers you need. Mistake #1: Applying For All Sorts of Jobs With The Same Company This is where “keeping your options open” (which seems like a good idea) can actually backfire on you in a major way. Fundamentally, you have one core area of expertise. “Expertise” means that which you master and that which is your favorite. You can be good at plenty of things that don’t necessarily make your heart thing. However, there is something you do that you are excellent at professionally-speaking, and that you love to do all day long â€" that’s what you want to present to the employer. Then, as hard as it is, let the opportunities that don’t match your expertise float on by. I realize it’s counterintuitive to not go for nearly anything and everything. However just because you can do it because you offer other areas of skill, doesn’t mean you should do it. Everything is not for you. Additionally, the organization is not going to look upon you favorably when you claim to have skill sets that differ with every way the wind blows. Mistake #2: Applying For Jobs Inconsistent With Your Background Or Experience Related to mistake #1, this happens when you come across roles that you read and feel you could do, so you go ahead and apply. In your mind, of course you can execute those duties. However, the problem is there’s a wide mismatch between what the job ad says and what your resume says. The prospective employer can only read your resume â€" they can’t read your mind. The onus is on you to speak the employer’s language. Break down that ad and zoom in on the main 3-4 tasks the person who gets that job needs to actually come in and do in order to get paid every 2 weeks. Doing so forces you to focus on what’s core to the job. If the ad is calling for a Sales Director, 1 line of the ad may say, “Drive revenue growth across an assigned territory.” Another line of the ad may say, “Demonstrate solid organizational skills.” The mistake that happens too often is when jobseekers highlight their organizational skills on their resume â€" being organized is not really what the employer is going to cut you a check for every 2 weeks. What will get you attention is demonstrating in the written word â€" not just thinking in your mind â€" where you have increased revenue growth. Mistake #3: Applying For Jobs Online And Making That 100% Of Your Job Search Strategy The online job boards are not the finish line. If the lion’s share of your “strategy” is to see what’s online, then “apply’ and “submit,” (or worse yet, “quick apply) then you’re doing what, literally, 98% of the jobseekers who are competing with you are also doing. The job boards are the starting line. Jump off from there. Before you apply for an opportunity, use LinkedIn advanced search to identify a decision maker in the organization to reach out to. Apply and directly message the person at the same time. Put your thinking cap on. If one company in an industry is hiring, find out what other companies are in that same industry sector. You don’t find this out through the ads, necessarily, because not every company is advertising. The unadvertised job market is a treasure trove of opportunity for you. The popular label is the “hidden” job market. But it’s not hidden at all. You already have the key to unlock it. It just requires more thought than “applying” and “submitting” 100 times every week. Step off the job boards into some other places on the Internet, for example, Google news, which aggregates news media stories from across the nation, and presents those to you in reverse-chronological order from as recently as 45 seconds ago. Type in the name of a company you’ve thought about or heard of â€" remember, regardless of whether there’s an ad â€" to find out what’s going on with the organization today. They may be working on something or about to launch something where your particular brand of core expertise can come into play. “Overqualified” and “age” don’t have to go hand-in-hand. People over 50 and 60 get hired week in and week out, frequently hearing multiple offers and being in the very strong position of having the option to choose which employers suits them best. We walk you through the exact steps in How To Get Hired In HALF The Time! Join the free training so you can stop just having your resume sucked into the black hole, get in front of the real decision maker, and demonstrate why you are the best person for them to hire.

Mechanical Engineering Marvel Resurfaces

Mechanical Engineering Marvel Resurfaces Mechanical Engineering Marvel Resurfaces If the sea never gives up the secrets of the deep, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is considered to be even pricklier. But 44 years after what may have been the Cold Wars boldest, most audacious mission, new details have emerged about an incredible intelligence operation that depended on an engineering marvel. The Glomar Explorer, a custom-built spy ship fitted with a series of mechanical systems one more impressive than the next, in 1968 sailed to a remote spot in the central Pacific Ocean to recover a sunken Soviet submarine, the K-129, fitted with atomic missiles from three miles below the surface. Speculation has followed Project Azorian through the yearsthe CIA did not even reveal the missions name until 2010, when it released declassified information and documents. The Glomar Explorers details were well-known before that; ASME in 2006 designated the ship as a historical mechanical engineering landmark. A new book, The CIAs Greatest Covert Operation, by David H. Sharp, provides a first-hand account of how the mission and Glomar Explorer were developed. Deep Cover Sharp, the CIAs head of systems recovery on Glomar, details the backroom dealings of the project and sets the tone for what was a nail-biting operation performed under close surveillance by Soviet ships that failed to detect the lift. For engineers, he puts personalities behind the names and faces of the Glomars designers, describing in detail the challenges of designing and manufacturing cutting-edge mechanical systems under a veil of secrecy and before the advent of todays computer power. His first-hand account of its operation on the high seas relives the crews tense apprehension as they attempted to lift a 2,000-ton submarine. No one had ever tried to design an at-sea docking system for such massive bodies, writes Sharp. To have gotten it right on the first try, without the benefit of todays CAD/CAM capabilities, is simply incredible. To accomplish the task, the CIA approached Howard Hughes, whose company, Hughes Tool Company, provided legitimacy for the cover of exploratory ocean mining at the wreck site. Global Marine Development Inc. designed the ship and the mechanical systems, building off of its work with the National Science Foundation in designing the Explorers predecessor, Glomar Challenger, used in deep-sea drilling for scientific studies of the Earths crust. Innovations and Advancements To raise such a heavy object in 17,000 feet of water, Global Marine enlisted a number of firms to help design a set of systems that ASME, in its citation, says included major innovations and advancements in mechanical engineering. They include: The gimbaled work platform system. 1. A large center well opening in the ships hull and a means of sealing it off so that the submarine could be examined in dry conditions. 2. A hydraulic lift system capable of hoisting a large, heavy load. 3. A tapered heavy lift pipe string, including tool joints, designed, constructed, and proof tested to exceptionally demanding standards. 4. A claw designed to grab and lift the submarine with mechanically articulated fingers that used surface-supplied sea water as a hydraulic fluid. 5. A motion-compensated and gimbaled work platform system that effectively isolated the suspended load from the roll, pitch, and heave motions of the ship. The docking leg system. 6. A docking leg systemthat supported the weight and controlled the motion of the claw and load during the transition from dynamic open water conditions to the shelter of the ships center well. Sharp writes that the most difficult hydrodynamic analyses of the ships systems were of the docking system, ...the most complex and frustrating. The problem we were trying to solve was how best to capture a large bodyswinging at the end of a string of pipe about 110 feet below the shipso it could be raised, under control, into the well of the ship. The task was complicated by the roll and pitch of the ship, with motions largely independent of those of the claw below, with or without the submarine in its grasp, he notes. Brain Power Analyses were performed and numbers crunched without computers; Sharp reminds that processing power was limited and the first PC did not make its debut until 1982. Designers referred to the issue as the three-body dynamics problem, with the bodies being the surface ship, pipe string and claw. Sharp says designers put more confidence in model testing because applicable equations were generally nonlinear and couldnt be handled easily by closed form solutions or deterministic equations. Sharp credits Jacques Hadler, Global Marines head of hydrodynamics, with working through scale models using a combination of Reynolds numbers and Froude numbers to solve the three-body problem. Sharp says the analysis gave us a pretty good idea of the magnitudes of relative motions to be expected between the docking legs and the [claw], but it didnt do a very good job of predicting which relative motions would be dominant. Glomar Explorer, an ASME historical mechanical engineering landmark. Design met reality during operations, says Sharp, adding that the analyses did not prepare the crew intellectually or emotionally for the physical shock and vibration imparted to the Glomar Explorer from impacts between the submarine and the docking legs. He vividly describes the reaction of the crew to the strains of the system and on the ship during operation. Mixed Results Ultimately, the systems claw succeeded in gripping the submarine, but about two-thirds of the hull broke off some 9,000 feet from the surface when a number of the claws tines failed. Most of the intelligence haul that the CIA was expecting to recover fell back to sea floor with the broken hull of the submarine. The Glomar Explorer did bring back the forward section of the hull, which included the bodies of six Soviet submariners who were later formally buried at sea. The CIA still has not released intelligence details that were recovered, or the extent of Project Azorians cost overruns, thought to be about $500 million in 1974 dollars. No one had ever tried to design an at-sea docking system for such massive bodies, writes Sharp. To have gotten it right on the first try, without the benefit of todays CAD/CAM capabilities, is simply incredible. The CIA was set to send Glomar Explorer on a second mission to attempt to recover the K-129s broken hull but the mission was scrapped as the U.S. government attempted to better relations with the Soviet Union. Glomar Explorer was eventually mothballed by the U.S. Navy. In 1997 it was leased by the Navy to Global Marine Drilling, which refitted it for deepwater drilling at a cost of $180 million. Its mechanical systems that made it so special were removed. Today it is owned by TransOcean Inc. No one had ever tried to design an at-sea docking system for such massive bodies. To have gotten it right on the first try, without the benefit of today's CAD/CAM capabilities, is simply incredible.David H. Sharp, author, The CIA's Greatest Covert Operation

This is the science behind why dancing is good for your brain

This is the science behind why dancing is good for your brain This is the science behind why dancing is good for your brain Is there anything more fun than a  good dance party? Whether you’re finding yourself in the middle of a  crowded dance floor with friends and family at a wedding  or have grabbed some gal pals for a night on the town jumping up and down to the hottest beats, there’s really nothing better. You’re singing along at the top of your lungs, spending QT with people you care about, and generally having the best time. It’s all kinds of wins.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! And maybe you weren’t looking for more reasons to dance, but we’ve got ’em for you, anyway: According to  UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, the chemicals released while dancing are actually really good for your brain. A recent  report  from GGSC on the combination of chemicals cleverly coined by  Daybreaker  CEO and co-founder Radha Agrawal as DOSE (dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorp hins) - states that dancing “uniquely benefits health and happiness.”“There are so many studies done around dance and happiness and the science of dance as a healing modality,” Agrawal tells us. “It’s the most healing modality that exists on the planet. When you dance, it releases your DOSE.”Here’s the science behind DOSE, the special combination of chemicals that comes together when you’re breaking it down on the dance floor.Dopamine:  According to the report from GGSC, dopamine is all about rewards. It’s released in the brain when we anticipate, enjoy, or remember pleasurable moments. Listening to music that we like increases dopamine levels, and since music is necessary for a good dance party, you’re setting yourself up for a dopamine release any time you start moving to the beat. Dopamine is also tied to spontaneous body movements - hello, dancing!Oxytocin:  The O in DOSE stands for oxytocin, which is the connection hormone. “You get it from the contact high of being shoulder to shoulder on the dance floor,” Agrawal says. “It’s actually a natural high that we can release by being in a room with multiple people around us. It’s a beautiful way to release your oxytocin.” Basically, the more, the merrier, the more oxytocin.Serotonin:  Per the GGSC, serotonin is credited with allowing for emotional contentment and ease - and it’s where the exercise side of dancing comes into play. Any workout can increase the level of circulating serotonin, and a high-energy dance sesh is no exception. Healthy serotonin levels help prevent anxiety and depression, improve sleep quality, and slow the aging of the brain.Endorphins:  Like serotonin, endorphins have to do with exercise. You’ve likely heard the release of endorphins described as a “runner’s high.” Endorphins take your brain a step further than serotonin, though, by limiting feelings of tiredness and pain. They free up your energy to focus on the fun of dancing instead of the fact that it’s making you sleepy and maybe even a little sore.If you still need proof of the wonders that dance can do for your mind and body, Agrawal can help. “When people say seated meditation is the only way to meditate, they’re so wrong,” she says. “You can totally meditate and dance. That’s how I meditate - I’m on the dance floor, dancing and meditating, reconnecting to myself, getting present to myself. It’s true therapy.”This article originally appeared on Brit and Co.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

8 unrealistic expectations smart people ignore

8 unrealistic expectations smart people ignore 8 unrealistic expectations smart people ignore Your expectations, more than anything else in life, determine your reality. When it comes to achieving your goals, if you don’t believe you’ll succeed, you won’t.Research from LSU shows that people who believe in themselves use more metacognitive functions than those who don’t. This means that they use more of their brains and have more brainpower to solve problems. Metacognition is especially important for achievement as it ensures that you approach problems from many different angles and adapt your approach as needed. The tricky thing about your expectations is that they impact other people too. As far back as the 1960s, Harvard research demonstrated the power of our beliefs in swaying other people’s behavior. When teachers in the studies were told that certain (randomly selected) children were smart, those kids performed better, not only in the classroom, but also on standardized IQ tests.Indeed, we get the most out of other people when we believe in them. Research shows that this happens because when we believe in someone, we treat them better than people we think will fail, we give them more opportunities to succeed than we give those we think will fail, we give them more accurate, helpful feedback than we give others, and we do more teaching because we believe it’s time well spent. Letting your doubts cloud your belief in someone (or something) practically ensures their failure. Medical professionals call this the “nocebo” effect. Patients who have low expectations for medical procedures or treatments tend to have poorer results than those who expect success, even with regards to well-established treatments. If a doctor uses a treatment with a clinically verified high rate of success but presents it in a negative light, the probability of a negative outcome increases.Your expectations shape your reality. They can change your life, emotionally and physically. You need to be extra careful about (and aware of) the expectations you harbor as the wrong ones make life unnecessarily difficult. Be especially wary of the expectations that follow - they give people all kinds of trouble.Life should be fairWe’ve all been told a million times (and likely told other people) that life isn’t fair, but in spite of what we know about the intricacies of injustice, it’s a concept that doesn’t quite sink in in practice. A surprising number of us subconsciously expect life to be fair, and we believe that any unfairness that we experience will somehow be balanced out, even if we don’t do anything about it. If you’re stuck in that mindset, it’s time to get over it. When something “unfair” happens, don’t rely on outside forces to get you back on your feet. Sometimes there isn’t any consolation prize, and the sooner you stop expecting there to be, the sooner you can take actions that will actually make a difference.Opportunities will fall into my lapOne of the most important things a person can do is stick his or her neck out and seek opportunity. Just because you deserve a raise, a promotion, or a company car, doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. You have to make it happen. You have to put in the hard work, then go and get what’s yours. If we limit ourselves to what’s given to us, we are at the mercy of other people. When you take action, think “what steps do I need to take?” “what obstacles are in my way and what do I need to do to remove them?” and “what mistakes am I making that take me away from my goals rather than toward them?”Everyone should like mePeople have hang-ups, and that means all sorts of decent, kind, respectable people are not liked by (some) others, for no good reason at all. When you think that everyone should like you, you end up with hurt feelings when you shouldn’t (you can’t win them all). When you assume that people are going to like you, you take shortcuts; you start making requests and demands before you’ve laid the groundwork to really understand what the other person is thinking and feeling. Instead of expecting that people will like you, focus on earning their trust and respect.People should agree with meThis one can be tough. Sure, you know what you’re talking about, and for that reason, people should take you seriously, but expecting people to agree with yo u out of courtesy or because your ideas are so incredibly sound is another story. Something that’s obvious to you might not be so to someone with different experiences and a different agenda, so stop being offended when people disagree with you, and stop assuming that there is only one right answer (yours). Instead, focus on how you can find solutions that give everyone what they need.People know what I’m trying to sayPeople can’t read your mind, and what you’re trying to say is rarely what other people hear. You can’t expect people to understand you just because you’re talking- you have to be clear. Whether you’re asking someone to do something without providing the context or explaining a complex concept behind a big project, it’s easy to leave out relevant information because you don’t think it’s necessary. Communication isn’t anything if it isn’t clear, and your communication won’t be clear until you take the time to understand the other person’s pers pective.I’m going to failAs I’ve touched upon already, if you expect to fail, you stand a higher chance of creating the very outcome you’re worried about. If you fail, accept that sometimes you’ll fail and sometimes you’ll succeed, but if you pursue an endeavor, believe with all your being that you’re going to succeed in that endeavor. Otherwise, you’ll limit the chances of that happening.Things will make me happySure, things can make life more fun and comfortable in the short run, but they can’t make you happy in the long run. Too many of us expect a future event (“I’ll be happy when I get that promotion”) to make us happy, instead of looking more deeply into the real causes of our unhappiness. If you don’t fix what’s going on inside, no external event or item is going to make you happy, no matter how much you want it to.I can change him/herThere’s only one person in this world you can truly change - yourself - and even that takes a tremendous amount o f effort. The only way that people change is through the desire and wherewithal to change themselves. Still, it’s tempting to try to change someone who doesn’t want to change, as if your sheer will and desire for them to improve will change them (as it has you). You might even actively choose people with problems, thinking that you can “fix” them. Let go of this faulty expectation. Build your life around genuine, positive people, and avoid problematic people that bring you down.Bringing it all togetherBelieving that you’ll succeed really does make it more likely that you will. It also means that you’ll need to let go of some erroneous expectations that will only get in your way. This article first appeared on LinkedIn.

Coast Guard College Student PreCommissioning Initiative

Coast Guard College Student PreCommissioning Initiative Coast Guard College Student PreCommissioning Initiative Many people wonder if the Coast Guard has an ROTC program, as do the other military branches. The answer is no. The Coast Guard has an Officer Candidate School, and an Academy, as do the other services, but no ROTC program. What they do have, some might think is a better deal than ROTC: The Coast Guard College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative, or CSPI. Under this program, college sophomores can receive active duty pay at the rate of E-3, as well as a scholarship for their junior and senior year. Upon graduation, candidates attend the 17 week Coast Guard Officer Candidate School and are commissioned as an ensign. After commission, they must remain on active duty for at least three years. Sounds like a pretty good deal, right? Two years of college scholarship, two years of enlisted pay, and a commission, all in exchange for three years of active duty. How can you beat that? Well, there are a couple of catches, which well discuss in a bit. But first, a little bit about the program: Program Overview The CSPI is a Coast Guard scholarship program for college sophomores (apply as a sophomore, started the program as a junior). The program provides a monthly salary, full tuition, some fees, and the cost of some books during the students junior and senior year. Members in the program must attend enlisted basic training, and participate in various Coast Guard training events throughout the duration of the program. During their junior year, CSPI students attend the Officer Indoctrination School at the Coast Guard Academy or receive on-the-job training at various Coast Guard operational units. Upon graduation, members are guaranteed the opportunity to attend Coast Guard OCS. If the applicant graduates from OCS he/she is commissioned as an ensign in the United States Coast Guard  and is obligated to complete at least three years of active duty. Eligibility Requirements Score 1000 on the SAT, 1100 on the SAT I, 23 on the ACT, or ASVAB GT of 109 or higherBe between 19 and 27 (applicants must have reached their 19th birthday, but not their 28th birthday as of 30 September of the fiscal year in which the panel convenes.)Must be a sophomore or junior (with at least 60 college credits completed toward your degree)Enrolled in a four-year degree program at an approved institution with a minimum 25% minority populationMust be able to complete a bachelors degree within 24 months after entry into the program Must not be a conscientious objectorMeet all physical requirements for a Coast Guard CommissionMaintain a GPA of 2.5 or betterMust be a U.S. CitizenMust be able to obtain a Secret security clearanceDependency - If single, may not have sole or primary custody of dependents.  If married, may not have more than 2 dependents (your spouse is considered your dependent, regardless of military status).Financial - Must meet all financial obligations, and not have a debt to income ratio in excess of 30% ratio of debt to projected income at applicant’s accession level (i.e. at the E-3 level). Benefits Full tuition, some or all of textbook costs and approved fees paid for two yearsMonthly salary of E-3 payMedical ( Tricare ) coverage and Servicemembers Group Life Insurance30 days paid leave (vacation) per year What's the Catch? College/University: Applicants must be a sophomore or junior undergraduate student enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a bachelor degree program at an accredited college or university designated as: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI)Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU)The following colleges and universities located in Guam, Hawaii, and Alaska:- University of Guam- The University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hilo, and West Oahu- Argosy University - Hawaii- Institute of American Indian and Alaska Native Culture Online Degrees: Online degrees do not qualify for CSPI - however, individuals attending an online institution may apply if they have acquired a four-year institution’s acceptance to earn their undergraduate degree. Foreign Degrees: Applicants possessing an associate’s degree conferred by a foreign school are required to include in their application a course-by-course assessment from an organization such as Education Credential Evaluators, in addition to the inclusion of the translation of their degree (if in a language other than English). Case-by-Case Consideration: Coast Guard Recruiting Command may consider, on a case-by-case basis, schools not included in the above description that has had a minority student population averaging at least 50% of the total student enrollment for the past three years. In order to be approved, the applicant must be currently attending that school. Service Obligation. In order to enroll in the program, you must enlist as an E-3 in the Coast Guard with a four-year active duty  enlistment contract, and a four-year inactive reserves duty obligation. Like all initial accessions, your total military obligated service is a total of eight years. Whatever portion of that time is not spent on active duty is spent in the IRR (Individual Ready Reserves). For example, if you spend two years in the program, then three years as a commissioned officer on active duty, and elect to separate, you are then placed in the IRR for the next three years (total of eight years), and can be  recalled to active duty  during that time in the event of war or conflict. Enlistment. As mentioned in the paragraph above, you must first enlist on active duty in the Coast Guard as an  E-3  and attend  Coast Guard  enlisted basic training. If you fail to complete any portion of the program, fail to maintain a GPA of 2.5, or drop out of the program, the Coast Guard may (and probably will) reassign you as an active duty enlisted member to a Coast Guard operational unit for the remainder of your  enlistment contract. If you then fail to complete your enlistment obligation, you may be required to reimburse the Coast Guard for any expenses they have paid towards the cost of your college education, in accordance with United States Code,  Title 10, Section 2005. Duty Requirements. While in the program, you must wear your Coast Guard uniform at least one day per week while attending college classes. You must maintain Coast Guard weight, fitness and  grooming standards. Additionally, you must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours, attend all scheduled classes and work a minimum of three hours per week for the  local Coast Guard Recruiter  (performing any and all duties he/she assigns you to do). UCMJ. CSPI students are military members on active duty. As such, they are subject to the provisions of the  Uniform Code of Military Justice  (UCMJ). This means students are subject to  court-martial,  nonjudicial punishment, or  administrative sanctions  should they commit a  military offense. For example, while in the program, if you decide to skip a class because you want to see the latest movie, or feel like sleeping in late, the CG could punish you for Failure to Go, which is a violation of  Article 86  of the UCMJ. If you decide to smoke a little week with your college buddies on the weekend, and the CG finds out about it, you could be punished for a violation of  Article 112a. If you get a DUI  or are caught drinking  underage, or found to be drunk when you should be in class...well, you get the picture. In addition to such UCMJ punishments, you would also likely be removed from the program and required to perform your remaining active duty time as an enlisted member. Still interested? Then the person to see is your local  Coast Guard Recruiter. The recruiter can give you additional details, as well as yearly application date deadlines.
